Some people think that once they delete the message from Instagram they are immediately deleted from the Instagram servers, but this statement is not properly correct. Now the question arises Do Instagram keeps deleted messages?
One such case came when a cybersecurity researcher named Saugat Pokharel requested a copy of his deleted photos and private messages that he deleted more than a year ago showing that the information has been entirely removed from the Instagram’s servers.
Instagram said that it was a bug that was present in their system and for this bug, he was rewarded a bounty of $6,000. According to a report by TechCrunch the bug was discovered in the month of October last year and was fixed a month ago.
“The researcher reported an issue where someone’s deleted Instagram images and messages would be included in a copy of their information if they used our Download Your Information tool on Instagram. We’ve fixed the issue and have seen no evidence of abuse. We thank the researcher for reporting this issue to us.,” an Instagram spokesperson said.
However, it’s not clear how many users were affected by this flaw. It’s not only Instagram who stores the data after being deleted by the users and it’s a common practice.
Do Instagram keeps deleted messages for more than a year?
Many big companies keep the deleted data. Whenever a user deletes data from the online platform that data is deleted immediately removed from their servers there is a time gap after which the data gets deleted from their servers.
According to Instagram, they keeps the data for around 90 days in their servers after that the data gets completely deleted from their servers.
A similar type of flaw was found in Twitter a year ago in which a user could access the deleted direct messages including the message sent to and from suspended and deactivated accounts using their own data download tool.
